XT600E,XTZ660 oder NX500

Hello everyone,

I need your advice on a decision. :)

I had 2 XT600Z Tenere 3AJ (1988 and 1989) and loved them both. I had to sell them because I moved and moving the bikes would have been very expensive. Now I am looking to buy another bike and am undecided:
use case: 300-400 km daily trips in Austria and 1000-3000km trips once per year in summer, two people (65kg+45kg) and some luggage.
some wishes: the sound of the 3AJ, cheap and easy to find parts, very reliable, easy to maintain, simple

XT600E:
basically same bike as 3AJ, but more parts are available.
Light, robust, easy to maintain, enough power
Harder to find in Austria (easier to find is the XT500E: same bike but smaller engine)
Newer models don't sound like my 3AJs
expensive

XTZ660 Tenere:
better for longer trips with heavier stuff
power
more expensive to buy in good condition

(Honda NX500 Dominator (the NX650 is rare in Austria))
cheap to buy (1000-1500€) in very good condition
only 24hp
very nice design
quality parts and cheap to find
not so reliable?

Hi Vlad,
there should be some 3AJ around if you wait a bit, they come up every few weeks. Why dont you wait for one of these?
The 500 cc version is available more often, as they were sold more frequently for lower insurance/tax reasons back in the day:

The NX500 is a more quirky bike, very short, good for small roads, but:
If you fit a bigger tank the engine may overheat. The cylinder head runs very hot anyway. The later 650 is the better option there.
You also may look into the Suz or Kawa stuff

Do you mean 300-400 "daily trips" (means: EVERY day, like to work and back), or "day trips", like in several 3-400 km weekenders per year?
If it is daily really, I would go for a water cooled engine.

Parts for the 3AJ are rare. I had a big problem with a tank on one of my 3AJs and could not find a replacement with a reasonable price. This is why I am even looking at other bikes.

Sorry, my mistake. I meant "day trips": on weekends I would love to take some trips around Austria: 500-600-700 km/weekend, not every weekend.

I am not looking at other brands, because I already know the XT well and like it. Switching means I have to relearn everything and if I don't have to, then I would rather not. Are the Suzukis(DR) or Kawasakis(KLR) that much better than the Yamahas (XT)?

nah these are just bikes with a good sound and some punch as well.

The 500cc may struggle a bit, although I always found 38 HP enough. Apart from the tank and some ignition pickups, most parts for the 3AJ should be available. The tank is stell and can be welded ...
