Cylinderhead problems...

Beitrag von XTFinland »

Excuse me for writing in english... I hope someone of you can help me anyway.

I have just bought a -88 xt 600 with 28000 km. When I tried it for the first time I heard a strange sound from the engine. The sound started when I have trottle vide open only. I dont did anything in the beginning but it just became worse... This weekend I saw that oilbubbles came out under the cylinder head. I took away the cylinder head cover and found four loose cylinderheadbolts!!! Now to the trouble, when i tried to tighten the bolts (25 nm) one of them never became tight, just turn round and round. Have someone else had a problem like this? What to do? Is it possible to put "helicoils" in the cylinder? Where do I find a new cylinderhead gasket? Another problem that i have is that one exhaustvalve is almost broken at the top, yes, THE TOP! I dont can understand what could have happened to it. It seems like the valve is to soft on the top... Where do i find an exhaustvalve?

A XT with 28000 km should not have problems like this, or?

It would be really nice if someone could help me...

Hello it is possible to youse "Helicoil" for the Cylinderheadbolts. Sorry my englich. If you use the "Helicoil" is a good idea to select the Cylinder from the rest of the engine. A new Valve you can bay in the shop from [link:www.kedo.de?f_support=www.xt600.de|KEDO].de
I hope thats help.

The bolt thing does come from the former owner. This happens if you tighten a bolt too much (or use grease an it PLUs a torque wrench - the numbers only fit dry or lightly oiled threads ...) - Shame on him (or on his workshop).

The valves become damaged on their ends, because the valve adjustment screws destroy the surface ("pitting"). That is a ususal thing after a few 10.000 km. Or you mean something else - do you have pictures?

Are you sure about the age (28.000 km)?

Hello!
I am not sure but the bike is in really good kondition. (Brakediscs, painting, plastic, etc.) The bike is imported from another land for five years ago. I dont even know from witch country it cames... Is it possible to se where the bike have been sold as new? Is it also possible to se if this engine appertain to this bike (cyl.nr and bike nr.)?

(The valves become damaged on their ends, because the valve adjustment screws destroy the surface ("pitting"). That is a ususal thing after a few 10.000 km.)

This is the most beliveable reason, but why is just one exhaustvalve damaged?

Maybe the other valves have already been replaced.

If you write us the beginning of the engine/frame serial numbers, it might be possible to determine the export version (there were some special numbers for some countries).

Hello!

Here is the bike number: 2NF-000775 and the cylinder number is 34K02.

Yesterday I order engine gaskets and an exhaustvalve from www.[link:www.kedo.de?f_support=www.xt600.de|KEDO].de

How long does it take before parts comes from this company?
To Finland it takes ofcourse a couple of days longer...

It is lot of job to take away the cylinder?

If i put helicoils I think it is best to take away it...

When the cylinderhead cover is away, it is just to take away the camshaft and then the cylinderhead + cylinder, am I right?

Hi,

if it's not too late anyway, I can send you a pdf-file of an exploded drawing for a xt600, year of manufacture 1983-89 (Type 43F). It's around 3,7 MB large. It may help. If so, just send an email or personal message via our forum system.

Best Regards,

Mr_Moto
